What Is OpenClaw? The Autonomous AI Agent, Explained

OpenClaw is an open-source autonomous AI agent that acts, not just chats. What it is, what it does, what you need to run it, and the managed shortcut.

Short version: OpenClaw is an open-source autonomous AI agent. Not a chatbot you talk to, an agent that actually does things, on its own, across your tools and channels. You give it a goal, it figures out the steps and executes them.

That distinction is the whole point, and it's where most people get confused. Let's make it concrete.

A chatbot answers. An agent acts.

ChatGPT writes you an email. OpenClaw sends it, after reading the thread, checking your calendar, and booking the meeting it proposed. One gives you words. The other closes the loop.

Under the hood OpenClaw is a gateway: it connects to as many channels and tools as possible, then orchestrates them. It can run on chat, email, a phone line, and a real browser, and it ships with 100+ built-in skills plus a community marketplace for more. You point it at an AI model for the reasoning, and it handles the doing.

What OpenClaw can actually do

  • Inbox & calendar - triage email, draft replies, book meetings.
  • A real browser - log in, fill forms, clear captchas, reach the 90% of tools that have no API.
  • Phone - its own line for inbound and outbound calls.
  • 1,000+ integrations - Slack, Notion, Stripe, HubSpot, Sheets and the rest.
  • Files & memory - its own workspace it creates, edits and versions.

It's one generalist agent, not a bot-per-task. Need more capacity? Run several.

What you need to run it yourself

OpenClaw is free and open-source, so the software costs nothing. To actually run it, you need four things:

  • A server that's online 24/7 (a VPS, a home machine, a Mac Mini).
  • Docker and some terminal comfort to install and update it.
  • An AI model for the brain. Connect Codex in two clicks (it's the sharpest default), or bring Claude, Gemini, or an API key.
  • Security config, so an exposed instance doesn't become someone else's problem.

The honest catch

Setup is a weekend, not a click. Then it's yours to babysit: when it crashes at 3am, when an update breaks something, when a misconfigured port exposes it. The software is free. The operations are not, they cost your time, and the time never stops.

That's fine if you enjoy infrastructure work. Most people just want the agent.

The shortcut

molted runs OpenClaw for you as a fully managed, autonomous agent. We provision the server, lock it down, install everything, monitor it 24/7 and heal it when it stumbles. You bring your AI subscription, we run the engine, and you're chatting with a working agent in about two minutes, from $14/month.

Same OpenClaw. None of the ops.
