At 5:40 on a Tuesday morning, Mark opens an incognito tab in his garage office outside Burlington and types the keyword that pays his mortgage: best fly fishing waders. His store isn't in the top three anymore. It's sitting at eight. By 5:43 he has emailed his SEO consultant, subject line: "did we drop??"
The email lands with Lena, who runs her consultancy from a spare bedroom in Burlington's Old North End. Seven retainer clients, no employees. Her weeks are crawl exports at midnight, title tags rewritten in spreadsheets, guest post pitches she means to send and never does. Audits eat her weekends. Rank checks happen in panic, usually after a client email like this one. She bills for strategy and spends her hours on grunt work nobody ever sees.

The switch
Another consultant in a Slack group mentioned she'd hired an agent for the grunt work. Lena was skeptical: she'd tested enough AI SEO tools that produced generic fluff with confidence. But the first 24 hours were free, so at 9:10, Mark's email still unanswered, she gave it one narrow mission: crawl Mark's site, find what broke, build the audit. Three clicks and it was running; she turned to another client's deck expecting a wall of filler.
The first mission
09:22. The molted crawled all 214 pages of Mark's store and listed 12 broken links, each with the page that pointed to it.
09:41. Nine title tags rewritten, laid out in a before and after table.
09:58. Internal link map drawn. Six orphan pages found, including a waders buying guide with zero links pointing to it.
10:15. The drop traced: a competitor had published a comparison page two weeks earlier. The agent archived it, tore it apart section by section, and drafted a brief to outrank it.
10:26. Everything assembled into a deck, ordered by impact, the competitor brief as slide two.
The report
The report was waiting before her second coffee: audit decked, drop explained, counter brief drafted, plus a proposed reply to Mark's 5:43 email. She read the deck twice, hunting for the generic fluff. It wasn't there. The broken links were real. The orphan pages were real. She typed two words: send it. Mark had his answer before lunch, cause and counterattack included, on a panic that used to cost her a weekend. Then she carried her coffee to the porch and watched the neighborhood sprinklers come on, which is not how her Tuesdays usually go.
Months later
Lena runs one molted per client now, nine agents on the Agency plan at $131 a month. SERP watch never blinks: when a money keyword slips at midnight, she knows the cause before the client knows the drop. Guest post outreach, the thing she never got to, has landed 11 placements across her accounts. She had budgeted a junior hire this year at $52K; she didn't make it. She took on two more retainers instead and raised her rates 20 percent. Mark hasn't sent a panicked email since March.
She sells judgment now; the grunt work belongs to the machine.
