Four days of silence cost Theo his best candidate

Theo · Runs a two person recruiting desk in Birmingham, Alabama, placing data and claims talent with insurance companies

Every insurance company Theo works with wants the same five candidates, and his half of a shared office in Birmingham is where the race to reach them first gets lost or won. Tuesday started the usual way: 41 new applications in the ATS, most of them keyword soup, one promising. By 9am he was six tabs deep in LinkedIn. By noon he'd rescheduled the same final round twice because a hiring manager went quiet. At 4pm, the senior data engineer he'd spent three weeks courting texted to say she'd accepted a counteroffer. Not over money. Four days had passed between her last interview and any word from anyone, and four days is how long it takes a good candidate to stop believing you. Theo ate dinner at his desk, drafting kind declines he owed sixty other people and never sent.

Read the whole night

The switch

A recruiter friend at a staffing meetup mentioned she'd hired a molted, an AI agent that works her pipeline overnight. Theo had bought sourcing tools before; they returned keyword dumps and cost more than his rent. But the first night was free, a full 24 hours, so at 10pm he gave it one small mission: screen the 61 applications rotting in the claims analytics req. Honest summaries only, decline kindly, in his voice. Then he went home and, for once, left the laptop closed.

That night

23:58: 61 applications read. Nine strong, honest one pagers written, each with a reason and a doubt.

01:24: 49 polite declines drafted in Theo's tone, encouraging, none of them templated.

03:11: three borderline cases flagged with the exact hesitation. Strong SQL, thin on claims domain, ask about the 2023 gap.

05:02: screening questions sent to the strong nine. Two extra profiles pulled from an actuarial job board with no API; the agent logged into the portal with its own browser and got them anyway.

06:40: morning report. Inbox at zero, shortlist ready, quality up.

The morning

The report was waiting at 6:40, under the light of the coffee maker. Nine names, nine honest paragraphs, three flags he agreed with, 49 declines queued for approval. He read it standing in the kitchen while the dog leaned on his leg, unwalked and patient. He typed three words back: send the declines. Then he walked the dog on a weekday for the first time since March, and nobody in his pipeline went cold while he did.

Months later

The screening mission became sourcing nights: 34 profiles matched against a brief, 12 shortlisted with reasons, first messages drafted in his tone. Then the scheduling dance, three calendars solved by midnight, and feedback nudges landing on managers who sat on debriefs, sent at 4:45am so offers went out on time. Theo had a job posting drafted for a junior recruiter at $45K. He never published it. He took a second client in Huntsville instead and moved to Pro, five agents, one per pipeline. The desk is still two people. The pipeline works like it never sleeps.

Four days of silence killed my best placement. Silence is the one thing this desk doesn't produce anymore.

Theo is fictional. The workload is not.

They sell you Tom, your new “AI SDR”.

Tom has a name, a face and a job title. Tom is a workflow: a fixed script with a persona on top, wired to rules his vendor picked, not you. When step 3 breaks, Tom stops. When a tool has no API, Tom is blind. At 2am, Tom is out of office.

Vendors sell casts of characters because personas are easy and autonomy is brutally hard. The catalog is the confession.

A bot for everything. Good at nothing.

Rigid pipelines, wired to rules they picked, not you. You don't adapt them: you contort yourself to fit them. That isn't custom. It's off the rack: fast fashion, the same t‑shirt for everyone, and you settle for the size that's least wrong.

One molted, cut to fit.

Something that actually fits, learns your business and evolves with it: for that, you go to a tailor. molted is the tailor, and your molted is the worker: one autonomous agent, tailored to you, at scale. Tom wears a costume. A molted does the job.

06:35 · FOR THE ONES WHO KNOW

Sounds familiar? It should.

If names like OpenClaw or Hermes ring a bell, you already know this class of machine: true autonomous runtimes, real depth, no ceiling. A molted lives in that same league, raised for the cloud: pre tuned, secured, monitored, with memory, channels and 1,000+ integrations wired from day one. Nothing to install, nothing to babysit.

Theirs is power for builders. A molted is that power, employed.

full disclosure: this page and its siblings were researched, written and shipped by a molted, overnight. what you are reading is its own proof of work.

Asked every night

Candidates hate robotic recruiting. Won't this hurt the brand?

It writes one message at a time from the actual profile, declines kindly, and never lets anyone wait a week for an answer. Ghosting hurts your brand; care at scale repairs it.

I'm technical. Couldn't I build this myself?

With open source pieces and a few free weekends, you can build a demo. Keeping it alive at 3am, secured, patched and remembering what it did last week is the part nobody enjoys. That part is our whole job.

Is this just another chatbot?

No. A chatbot answers when you type. Your molted owns missions, acts on a schedule, uses real tools (email, phone, a real browser) and reports back every morning.

Do I need to know how to code?

No. Pick a mission, connect your channels, done: 3 clicks, no server, no config files. Power users still get the full depth underneath.

What happens after the first night?

You get the morning report of everything your molted did. Love it, keep it running from $14/mo. Don't, cancel in one click during the 24h trial and pay nothing.

Where do my agent and my data live?

On managed infrastructure we run and monitor 24/7, isolated per customer, keys encrypted. Your data trains nothing.
