A pallet of Dutch ovens from their Ohio supplier had been sitting in an Indianapolis yard for two days, and nobody knew until a retailer emailed asking where their order was. She ran ops for a cookware distributor in Peoria: 14 daily checks in a spreadsheet only she opened, reorder points she caught from memory, vendor SLAs that got enforced only after a customer complained. Last Tuesday's incident, a mislabeled lot, still had no postmortem, because postmortems happen at night and her nights looked like this one. The SOPs lived in her head. The switch

That night
23:47, the checklist ran: 12 green, 2 amber, each amber with a cause written under it, one freight scan gap, one supplier acknowledgment overdue. 01:10, it spotted the SLA breach on the Indianapolis pallet, logged into the carrier portal with a real browser, pulled the yard status, and emailed both the carrier and the supplier with dates and the contract clause. 03:24, reorder points hit on two SKUs, 10 inch skillets and glass lids; two POs sat drafted, waiting on her word. 05:40, it read the ticket thread from the mislabeled lot, drafted the postmortem, and patched the receiving SOP with a label check step. 07:00, the morning report landed.
The morning
One page, plain language. Two ambers explained. The pallet chased, with a reply from the carrier already in the thread. Two POs pending. One SOP patched, diff included. Tara read it at the kitchen table and typed four words: approve both, send postmortem. The coffee finished brewing before she opened her laptop, which had not happened on a weekday since 2023. She drove her daughter to swim practice without checking her phone at the red lights.
Months later
The second mission was the refund process: molted traced it, found six steps where four would do, and wrote the rollout note for the team. Then vendor season: 12 contracts reviewed, three renewals inside 60 days, market prices pulled, briefs drafted with an ask and a fallback. She walked into the renegotiation knowing more than the rep did. The ops coordinator req she'd budgeted at 52K is on hold; the overflow warehouse in Pekin opened with the same checklist running from night one. Tara still runs ops. The machine hums whether she's watching it or not.
