Rewind eight months. Cole is the executive assistant to the CEO of a contract furniture maker in Minneapolis, and 7:00 used to mean eighty unread emails from West Coast dealers and overseas suppliers, all landed overnight. Calendar tetris in Outlook until 8:15. Meeting briefs scribbled from memory in the parking garage. A gallon bag of crumpled receipts riding shotgun. The intros the CEO promised at conferences died quietly in a drafts folder. Cole was the person who never dropped anything, which meant Cole was the person who never slept much either.

The switch
Another EA mentioned it at a conference in Chicago, and Cole's first reaction was defensive. This was the job. But the first 24 hours of the trial cost nothing, and setup was three clicks, no IT ticket, no server. So Cole gave the molted one narrow mission on a Wednesday evening: triage the CEO's inbox overnight, answer the routine ones in his tone, flag only what truly needs him. Cole fully expected to spend Thursday cleaning up its mess.
That night
23:47, first pass done: sixty three emails triaged, nine flagged for the CEO, forty one answered in his voice, each one short and warm the way Cole would have written it. 01:22, the molted noticed the 3pm on Thursday had no agenda, drafted one from the last thread, and queued it for Cole to send. 03:05, it caught the Friday conflict Cole hadn't seen yet, two board commitments overlapping, and drafted two options for resolving it. 05:20, it checked Tuesday's flight to High Point Market, caught a gate and time change, and updated the calendar. 07:00, the report: inbox at zero, nine items summarized to one line each, nudges queued for 9am pending a word.
The morning
Cole read the report at the kitchen counter, then read it again looking for the mistake. There wasn't one. The forty one sent replies sounded like the CEO on a good day. The nine that remained were the nine that actually mattered. Cole answered the report with three words, scraped frost off the windshield without dread for the first time since October, and got to the office with nothing on fire.
Months later
The inbox mission became four: calendar defense, meeting briefs, follow through, travel watch. A second molted now covers the CFO and the COO, so the plan to hire a second EA at $75K went quietly back in the drawer. The receipt bag is gone; expenses hunt themselves from the inbox and file overnight. Cole spends the reclaimed hours on board prep and the annual dealer offsite, work that looks a lot like chief of staff work, and the CEO has noticed. Cole still runs the CEO's day. It just no longer costs Cole's own.
