Milo walks into Monday already knowing the why, before anyone has thought to ask the question. It took him a while to admit that used to be the whole job.
Eight months ago he was the only analyst at a gear company in Eugene, forty people, one warehouse, five data sources that hated each other. Shopify, GA4, the 3PL dashboard, an email platform, and a wholesale portal with no API, which meant screenshots and manual exports every Sunday night. The Monday report ate his weekend. Then Monday morning someone would ask why conversion dipped Thursday, and the honest answer was that he'd noticed the dip but hadn't had time to chase it. He flagged things. He rarely explained them. By Wednesday the question had moved on and so had the decision, made without him.

The switch
A friend in Portland mentioned she'd hired a molted for reporting. Milo assumed it would invent numbers. But the first 24 hours were free, so on a Thursday after lunch he gave it one narrow mission: pull the week from all five sources, including the portal with no API, and draft the Monday report. Show your work, he wrote. Every figure links to the query or export behind it. If it hallucinated once, he'd cancel before the 24 hours ran out.
The first mission
14:12, it pulled the week's numbers from all five sources, the wholesale portal through its own browser, logging in the way Milo did.
14:31, it went off script, in the right direction. Checkout conversion was down 14% since Tuesday, and it traced the cause: a promo code had expired but the landing page still showed it. Customers were hitting an error at checkout and leaving.
14:50, impact quantified in lost orders, a fix ticket drafted for the web contractor.

The report
Milo read it at his desk, an hour after typing the mission. Every number had a link behind it. He clicked four of them, then stopped checking. The dip wasn't flagged, it was explained, with the fix already written. The Monday meeting he usually built on Sunday night was sitting there finished, and it was Thursday afternoon. He subscribed before the trial ended and took the dog on the long loop that evening for the first time in months.
Months later
The molted runs three standing missions now: the Monday report, an anomaly watch, a tracking sweep that catches broken events before decisions use them. When the founder asks something at 18:42, Milo forwards it and has cohorts cut six ways, evidence attached, before dinner. In March the company opened a req for a second analyst, $105K plus benefits. They quietly closed it. Milo spends his days on pricing and inventory questions, the work that moves margin, and his Sundays outside.
He used to be the person who noticed. Now he's the person who knows.
