The deal Vic lost while writing the deck for the deal before it

Vic · Independent operations consultant for food and ag manufacturers, Denver, Colorado

Vic runs a solo operations practice out of Denver, mostly food processors and ag equipment shops across the Front Range. The billable work is good: walk a plant floor, find the bottleneck, fix the changeover process. The problem is everything after 6pm. In March a discovery call went well, a cheese plant near Greeley, clear budget, clear pain. Then a delivery crunch ate the week and the proposal sat half drafted in a folder called PROPOSALS ACTIVE. Vic sent it on day nine. The prospect had signed with a firm out of Kansas City on day six. Same week: two invoices past sixty days unchased, a workshop deck built on stats Vic could no longer source, and a past client's acquisition announcement that deserved a note and never got one. Vic bills $185 an hour for thinking and spends the evenings typing.

Read the whole night

The switch

A consultant from Vic's peer group mentioned she'd hired an agent. Not software exactly, more like a night employee she briefed once. Vic was skeptical: the practice's whole value is judgment, and no tool drafts judgment. But the first night was free, 24 hours, so the test was cheap. One mission, deliberately small: here are tonight's discovery call notes, a services one pager, two old proposals for voice, and read access to the practice's project drive. Draft the proposal for the packaging line project. Send nothing. Vic closed the laptop at ten, annoyed in advance.

That night

19:30, the call notes came back structured: goals, constraints, and a budget signal Vic had half missed, the board had approved capex through Q3. 23:47, the proposal existed: scope, three phases, two pricing options, written in Vic's voice, built on Vic's framework. 01:15, it had gone through the old case studies and slotted in the three relevant ones, the cheese plant story first. 03:02, the contract template was filled and flagged with two clauses to review. 07:00, the morning report: proposal ready, one open question about travel billing, answer in a few words.

The morning

Vic read it standing at the kitchen counter, coffee going cold, the dog waiting by the door. The pricing on option two was low. Ten minutes of edits, real thinking, the kind Vic actually bills for. Typed "travel at actuals, then it's ready" and the proposal went out at 8:40, before the prospect's other calls had even booked their follow ups. Vic signed up before the walk.

Months later

The proposal mission is routine now. Vic added research nights before workshops, twelve competitors gridded with sources. Then RFP watch on the niche, then invoice chasing, the gentle version, so nobody gets an awkward email from Vic personally. Congrats notes go out when a past client hits a trigger event, which is where two of this year's four new engagements came from. The junior analyst Vic had budgeted $70K for never got hired. The pipeline stays warm during delivery crunches, which used to be the exact weeks it went cold. Vic still bills the thinking. The thinking is all Vic sells now.

The proposal used to take me four evenings. Now it's waiting at 7am and my job is to make it smarter.

Vic is fictional. The workload is not.

They sell you Tom, your new “AI SDR”.

Tom has a name, a face and a job title. Tom is a workflow: a fixed script with a persona on top, wired to rules his vendor picked, not you. When step 3 breaks, Tom stops. When a tool has no API, Tom is blind. At 2am, Tom is out of office.

Vendors sell casts of characters because personas are easy and autonomy is brutally hard. The catalog is the confession.

A bot for everything. Good at nothing.

Rigid pipelines, wired to rules they picked, not you. You don't adapt them: you contort yourself to fit them. That isn't custom. It's off the rack: fast fashion, the same t‑shirt for everyone, and you settle for the size that's least wrong.

One molted, cut to fit.

Something that actually fits, learns your business and evolves with it: for that, you go to a tailor. molted is the tailor, and your molted is the worker: one autonomous agent, tailored to you, at scale. Tom wears a costume. A molted does the job.

06:35 · FOR THE ONES WHO KNOW

Sounds familiar? It should.

If names like OpenClaw or Hermes ring a bell, you already know this class of machine: true autonomous runtimes, real depth, no ceiling. A molted lives in that same league, raised for the cloud: pre tuned, secured, monitored, with memory, channels and 1,000+ integrations wired from day one. Nothing to install, nothing to babysit.

Theirs is power for builders. A molted is that power, employed.

Asked every night

My value is my thinking. What's left for it?

Everything around the thinking: the formatting, the research legwork, the chasing, the pipeline. You sell judgment; it makes sure judgment is all you spend time on.

I'm technical. Couldn't I build this myself?

With open source pieces and a few free weekends, you can build a demo. Keeping it alive at 3am, secured, patched and remembering what it did last week is the part nobody enjoys. That part is our whole job.

Is this just another chatbot?

No. A chatbot answers when you type. Your molted owns missions, acts on a schedule, uses real tools (email, phone, a real browser) and reports back every morning.

Do I need to know how to code?

No. Pick a mission, connect your channels, done: 3 clicks, no server, no config files. Power users still get the full depth underneath.

What happens after the first night?

You get the morning report of everything your molted did. Love it, keep it running from $14/mo. Don't, cancel in one click during the 24h trial and pay nothing.

Where do my agent and my data live?

On managed infrastructure we run and monitor 24/7, isolated per customer, keys encrypted. Your data trains nothing.
